According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data, in 2019, the total per capita alcohol consumption in Alabama was 2.29 gallons of ethanol per person aged 15 years and older. This figure includes all types of alcoholic beverages.
Binge drinking is defined as consuming four or more alcoholic beverages for women and five or more drinks for men on a single occasion. In 2019, the binge drinking rate among adults (aged 18 years and older) in Alabama was 14.1%. This rate was slightly higher than the national average of 13.0%.
Alcohol-impaired driving refers to driving with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08% or higher. In 2019, Alabama had a rate of 2.1% of adults reporting driving after drinking too much, which was higher than the national average of 1.9%.
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) data from 2019, the past-month alcohol use among individuals aged 12 to 20 in Alabama was 16.1%. This figure was slightly lower than the national average of 19.8%.

The Alabama Department of Mental Health (ADMH) Alcohol Use Services is responsible for the regulation of Alabama’s public substance use services delivery system. ADMH does not operate any substance use disorder programs; however, we contract with community-based entities throughout Alabama to offer outpatient and residential services. All state-funded providers offer services on a sliding fee scale which is based on income, resulting in low or no-cost services to persons with low income.
