According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the percentage of adults engaging in binge drinking in Iowa was around 17.3% in 2019
Binge drinking is defined as consuming five or more drinks (for men) or four or more drinks (for women) in a short period, usually within two hours.
Fatalities: In 2019, there were a total of 85 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in Iowa, accounting for 26% of all traffic-related fatalities in the state, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The Iowa Department of Public Health reported that about 18% of Iowa high school students drank alcohol for the first time before the age of 13 in 2019.
In 2019, approximately 13,000 people received substance abuse treatment services in Iowa. Among those, alcohol was the primary substance of abuse for about 6,000 individuals.
