According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the percentage of adults engaging in binge drinking in Massachusetts was approximately 18.3% in 2019. Binge drinking is defined as consuming five or more drinks (for men) or four or more drinks (for women) in a short period, usually within two hours.

In 2019, there were a total of 130 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in Massachusetts, accounting for 31% of all traffic-related fatalities in the state, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The Massachusetts Youth Health Survey reported that around 28% of high school students in the state had consumed alcohol within the past 30 days in 2019.

In 2019, an estimated 57,000 people received substance abuse treatment services in Massachusetts. Among those, alcohol was the primary substance of abuse for approximately 30,000 individuals.

Since 1997, HRiA has operated the Massachusetts Alcohol Substance Use Helpline, providing free and confidential information and referrals for alcohol and other substance use problems.
