According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the percentage of adults engaging in binge drinking in Michigan was approximately 16.1% in 2019.

Binge drinking is defined as consuming five or more drinks (for men) or four or more drinks (for women) in a short period, usually within two hours.

In 2019, there were a total of 274 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in Michigan, accounting for 30% of all traffic-related fatalities in the state, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported that around 19% of high school students in the state had consumed alcohol within the past 30 days in 2019.

In 2019, an estimated 73,000 people received substance abuse treatment services in Michigan. Among those, alcohol was the primary substance of abuse for approximately 41,000 individuals.

State of Michigan Health & Human Services Alcohol Treatment; The Substance Use, Gambling and Epidemiology Section is responsible for clinical services within the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Treatment System. Staff provide technical assistance regarding Substance Use Disorder Treatment and Recovery to Prepaid Inpatient Health Plans, providers of services, and the public. Staff are also responsible for monitoring of the system to ensure federal funding requirements are met.
