Binge drinking is defined as consuming five or more drinks (for men) or four or more drinks (for women) in a short period, usually within two hours.
In 2019, there were a total of 140 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in Minnesota, accounting for 28% of all traffic-related fatalities in the state, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The Minnesota Department of Health reported that around 16% of high school students in the state had consumed alcohol within the past 30 days in 2019.
In 2019, an estimated 35,000 people received substance abuse treatment services in Minnesota. Among those, alcohol was the primary substance of abuse for approximately 15,000 individuals.

Alcohol use disorder, or AUD, is a medical disease often showing compulsive alcohol use, loss of control over alcohol intake, and a negative emotional state when not using alcohol. The National Institute of Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism describes the 11 signs and symptoms that may indicate alcohol use disorder (AUD). There may be a diagnosis of AUD if a person has at least two of the 11 signs and symptoms.
