According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the percentage of adults engaging in binge drinking in Missouri was approximately 16.4% in 2019.

Binge drinking is defined as consuming five or more drinks (for men) or four or more drinks (for women) in a short period, usually within two hours.

In 2019, there were a total of 278 alcohol-impaired driving fatalities in Missouri, accounting for 28% of all traffic-related fatalities in the state, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The Missouri Department of Mental Health reported that around 22% of high school students in the state had consumed alcohol within the past 30 days in 2019.

In 2019, an estimated 38,000 people received substance abuse treatment services in Missouri. Among those, alcohol was the primary substance of abuse for approximately 18,000 individuals.

Missouri Department Behavioral Health Alcohol Substance Use, the Division of Behavioral Health (DBH) manages programs and services for individuals who need help with their mental illnesses and/or substance use. Services available are prevention, education, evaluation, intervention, treatment, and rehabilitation. Here individuals and families seeking services can find the help they need. Most prevention and treatment services are provided by programs in the community through organizations which are contracted by the DBH to do so. These programs must meet federal and state requirements in order to provide mental illness and substance use treatment services.
